broke all my :session *R* headers.

But :session "*R*" works.

C-h f org-babel-read should mention *XYZ* is treated as lisp.

Maybe (org-babel-read "\"*R*\"") works for you.

Or I suppose you could hack this with (setq *R* "*R*")
