What time frames are we talking about? Fashion can be anything that
remains popular for only a few months up until something that dominates
the scene for years or decades. XDG appears to lean towards the latter.

I understood that, my point was that using XDG is preferable to that,
and anything that abstracts over XDG might be even better.
