The original standard was to use files that begin with a dot in the
user's home directory, with system-wide defaults in /etc or /usr/etc.

Then came the standard (copy-cat from Windows) that each type of files
had its own directory under the home directory -- so we have
~/Pictures, ~/Documents, ~/Desktop, ~/Mail, etc.

And now we have XDG.

I'm sure they will invent something else in a few years, which will of
course be the best thing since sliced bread.
