In the 1980s, filmmakers realized you couldn't make a believable movie about alien invasion without a character blurting out an expletive. On the other hand that kind of salty language could incur an R-rating which would halve their box office. So they cut a deal with the MPAA for a new "PG-13" rating. NonGNU is like that.
