   I'm also using Rmail, so it is not Rmail that causes it, at least not
   directly.  Most likely, it's some setting of coding-systems in your
   init files.

Hm, I don't have any coding-systems settings in my init file.  I'll
see if I can reproduce this using emacs -Q.
