It seems to me entirely possible that somebody decided they wanted to rename Emacs functions, and came up with a justification for it, rather than the other way around.
Very interesting, it seems to me that there’s plenty of evidence that people want a more consistent API, but people who already ‘know’ the function names are coming up with (IMHO weak) justifications to not ‘switch’.
