I can try to do that.  Here GNOME shell meanwhile has decided to ignore
all my earlier customizations and all it allows me to do is to start
applications via my keyboard shortcuts.

Not sure what to tell you. I've been a fairly satisfied GNOME user for the past year, and a user of Unity before that. The upcoming LTS release of Ubuntu (and GNOME release that comes with it) should be especially good/snappy/probably-even-stable.

But you likely have some particular requirements that I don't.

Maybe that will earn its respect instead.

I strongly doubt that.  IIUC we do that all the time, at least with
GTK-3.  One day all this will break down on us.

But we're never too vocal about it. :-)
