It’s not splatted with careful face customization. Namely, customize
the ‘region’ face to not specify :foreground but only :background, a
shade or tint very close to but distinct from your normal background.
May also need to set :distant-foreground to 'unspecified.

Example: my ‘default’ face is :foreground "#b3b3b4" :background
"#414042" (light gray on dark gray), and my ‘region’ is :background
"#4d4d4f" (slightly lighter but still fairly dark gray). All syntax
highlighting faces are still visible against this background. I avoid
changing background color alone for syntax highlighting.
