text the user enters, this is better, IMO. But if the point was to

that it doesn't make much difference in getting his attention.

Yes, that is right. I was thinking of the second scenario here (ie the user is looking somewhere else). I sent a suggestion as a patch to the list in this message:

This also includes a bug fix for the customize part of the initialization of minibuffer-prompt-properties.
