I first encountered install-info around 1996 (the man page is dated
1994) as a Perl script written by Ian Jackson, as I wrote earlier.  On
several occasions I have built texinfo from scratch, which invariably
broke dpkg, so I had to move the GNU version of install-info out of
the way.  A quick look at the Info page for GNU install-info and the
man page for Debian install-info suggests they have further diverged.

Usually Debian is very careful to respect the upstream sources and
practices, so I jumped to the conclusion that GNU recognized a good
thing when it saw it, and decided to provide the same capability to
all Info users and admins.

I'm sorry if I provided misinformation about the origin of the utility.

 My nostalgia for Icon makes me forget about any of the bad things.  I don't
