Equivalently yes, I do have (column-number-mode t) in my .emacs file.
However, emacs 21.1.90 started with -q --no-site-file still shows the
table menu correctly, so it is irrelevant in this case.
The mode-line is being updated when the point enter or leave the
table cell. That is done by way of 'point-entered and 'point-left
text property. These two properties have a symbol to a function that
does (set-buffer-modified-p (buffer-modified-p)) to update the
mode-line.
See the function `table--put-cell-point-entered/left-property',
`table--point-entered-cell-function' and
`table--point-left-cell-function'.
