You turned the right way :)

My guess is that Ubuntu have miss-built the Denemo sources. One thing
you can do to check this is to download a version of Denemo that does
not require installing (it has everything it needs in the executable,
so it is quite large but it highly likely it will work).
The latest build is at

http://www.denemo.org/~rshann/denemo_2.2.x.AppImage

which is linked to from the Downloads page on denemo.org http://www.den
emo.org/downloads-page/

Doing that will be very instructive - it will show if there is a
problem with the keystrokes being sent to the Denemo executable, or
more likely that there is some defective library that has been linked
in to the Denemo executable.

OTOH if you want to explore the 2.2.0 build you have further, the way
to go is to get up View->Command Center and try setting key shortcuts -
there are buttons to set shortcuts at the bottom left of the Command
Center. That will tell you what key codes are being received by Denemo
from the operating system - when you enter a one or two key shortcut
the name of the short cut will be shown against the name of the command
in the list of commands.
