convert \
 -colors 32 \
 -fill '#838385' -draw 'rectangle 344,104 393,88' \

 dddsplash.xpm d1.xpm

may do it (colors could be 'gray' and 'white').
Maybe,  a similar command should create the proper splash screen in
ddd/Makefile.am.
