   Looking at the code quality, it would be a very good thing to
   rewrite the code.  I'm rather worried that telnetd is vulnerable to
   several recent security problems, that have been fixed in other
   telnetd's which were based on the same historic code.

This is one of the many reasons why somethings should be rewritten,
but not because they are deriviate of BSD code.  The same applies to
many other things.
