I had the same thoughts, but I don't know the background of that code
in GNU InetUtils.

Looking at the code quality, it would be a very good thing to rewrite
the code.  I'm rather worried that telnetd is vulnerable to several
recent security problems, that have been fixed in other telnetd's
which were based on the same historic code.
