macOS has some amount of problems, roughly like AIX or Android.

What we try to do (in Gnulib and in the GNU Build System more generally)
is to find solutions that hide the complexity from the user. Libtool is
a good example of this approach. Here, we could not hide it completely,
but having to set CC and CXX in a particular way is quite acceptable,
since it's a one-liner.
