   Thinking about the random responses in the other program I ran this several
   more times from different directories to verify the little heart was a
   constant output.
   it came up the same regardless of where or how many times I ran it

     The Cygwin compiler can produce MinGW (i.e. native Windows) programs,
     if invoked with the -mno-cygwin switch.  The binary will then use the
     Windows runtime instead of cygwin1.dll.
