I'm sorry, but I'm totally confused by the HTML email messages.  As
far as I could see, the "thousands =" line printed a comma, and the
8-bit character that shows as a heart was in the "grouping =" line,
isn't that true?  At least that's what I get when I run that program
on XP.

Also, since the character, whatever it may be, printed in the
"thousands =" line does not change no matter how many times the test
program is run, the random character printed by Gawk cannot be
explained by that.

So I'm beginning to suspect that there's a bug in Gawk, after all.
Note, for example, that the Awk script which started this thread
consistently does not print a comma-separated number for me, although
the test program shows a comma for thousands separator.
