Hi Kurt,
As documented in the tar documentation in node "Blocking Factor" the
'--compress-block' option is no longer necessary to reblock compressed
archives.
Please also notice that you shouldn't be compressing files onto a tape
using gzip. The I/O error you receive is most likely from gzip.
Could you please clarify your problem for me? From your description
I'd assume that the tape was full and gzip was just not gracefully
handling that.
In addition, please report bugs using the latest alpha version. You
can get it on alpha.gnu.org. Currently this is version 1.13.25.
