hardware:
onstream ADR2.120 Si (scsi internal) on Adaptec 2940
linux: SuSE 7.3
kernel: 2.4.18 SMP
tar version: 1.13.18
short description:
compression does not effect with -b64
details:
i'm using tar with this parameters (onstream tape needs blocking data to
32k):
-cvzb64 -f /dev/rmt0
effect:
on a 30/60GB there's an input/output error aftwer writing 30GB
(without z parameter, there's a 'no space left on device' message after
that).
if i use (according to manpage) this parameters:
--block-compress -cvzb64 -f /dev/rmt0
there's a message: 'Obsolete option, now implied by --blocking-factor'
(-b is, according 'tar --help', --blocking-factor)
*but the compression seems to work* - 32 GB stored successfully
