We're going to have to be careful if we start allowing mp3s, jpg's
mpg's etc....

Before we can publish any material of that kind, we need to know the
provenance of the material. Or put another way, is the material truly
available under the GFDL?

In these days of the $100 scanner, we need to be very sure our
contributors haven't just scanned some convenient pictures out of a
book to illustrate their work. Assuming for the moment that it _is_
their work and not a cut & paste job.

Photographic and video copyright has a nightmarish quality about it.
Even if a work is out of copyright in one country, that may not be true
in others. And once you get to mp3 files...

As for moving images: There was an interesting  article on slashdot a
few days ago about an archive of out of copyright film footage
(converted to digital media). Maybe GNE could forge links either with
it, or a similar project, rather than trying to hold vast quantities of
mpegs ourselves.
