I agree when you say media should be independent of
the article text in their storage. A media ID would be
good. Certainly it would be good to keep them on a
seperate server.Thinking of large media too, we can't
expect people to use some "upload" button to upload a
2mb mp3 really can we? I certainly wouldn't, I'd be
looked for FTP access or something better than an
"upload" button. So the media servers could be set up
in the future with FTP access.

When you submit a type of media, it would be good to
tell if such a media type had already been uploaded to
avoid duplication, but that'd be tricky. You'd need to
assign keywords to all media types, and ask the
submitter to put in keywords about the media - it'd
find matches, then ask the author to check them all...
time consuming and (if the author is, like me, on a
poor old 33.6k modem looking to upload a 5 mb video)
one big big hassle that might put me off.

Maybe if you knew of a video or picture or any other
type of media in another article you too wanted to
refer to, you could then put in the MID (MediaID)
instead of uploading your own.

It's something I guess we should start looking at now,
but really worry about later on when we'll have to
worry about server space issues etc.
