yep, both good ideas and not lost on me but -v didn't tell me anything 
interesting and I don't have a 'scope :(

That is why I place myself at the alter of the great Avrdude comunity, 
ready to sacrifice my person to those more enlightened (and who have 
this particiular board and an oscilloscope)
