This was the simplest (for me) way to enter proper crosscompilation mode.
The autoconf manual states that:
"...Now, configure enters cross-compilation mode if and only if `--host' is
passed...."
and
"...Therefore, whenever you specify --host, be sure to specify --build
too..."

The build directory is still required.
