To have my patch work in your case, you can prepend
: ${CC=cc}
to your configure.in file.

But that introduces a dependency: configure.in must invoke AC_PROG_CC
before invoking AC_SYS_LARGEFILE. It is not good to have dependencies
like that.
Admittedly neither solution is ideal.
