hm anyway, make_services should be run as your current user, not as root.
Still it's definitely not normal it does what you describe :)

Well, it's normal I think -- LaTeXService is only available when
selecting text, and
with GW you can only select files. Open TextEdit or Ink, write some
text and select it,
and check the service menu -- LaTeXService should be available. Now,
you  just need to write the TeX code you want to be rendered :)

Try running make_services as your user. You perhaps need to restart
the apps too.
