   Could be, but on the other hand, a list management software offers other 
stuff,
   like the archives, if you are going to be off-line for a while you can change
   your subscription and then catch up later with messages by visiting the
   archives, etc, etc.

All the functionality you describe in the above paragraph works fine
without mailman.  Archives get written to /com/archive.  You can take
yourself off the list temporarily if you want to.
