Hello,
you'll find a new version of the "smooth hinting" document at
the following address, including screenshots:

there is also a new draft document trying to explain how font
*rendering* works on Unix systems. If you don't know precisely
what xfsft, xfstt, libXft, libXft2 and fontconfig are, this
paper should explain it:

This one doesn't have screenshots yet (and badly needs some)
