Hello,

you'll find a new version of the "smooth hinting" document at
  the following address, including screenshots:

    http://www.freetype.org/hinting/smooth-hinting.html

there is also a new draft document trying to explain how font
*rendering* works on Unix systems. If you don't know precisely
what xfsft, xfstt, libXft, libXft2 and fontconfig are, this
  paper should explain it:

    http://www.freetype.org/david/unix-font-rendering.html

This one doesn't have screenshots yet (and badly needs some)

As usual, comments would be highly appreciated :-)

Cheers,
