Maybe they use a list of Fallbackfonts for missing Glyphs like Pango does. If you want to browse the actually included characters in a font you can use a fonteditor like pfaedit or the simple df_fonts demo in DirectFB-examples (In df_fonts press 'u' to switch from the Unicode to the raw map, where you see just the list of Glyphs).
