It's been a minor annoyance for some time - editing the UTF-8 scripts
for dialog was about all I needed, but recently (starting last winter), 
people are sending mail with UTF-8.  I'd have done this early last year,
but $dayjob ate all of the time.  (Actually I have more use for Unicode
in $dayjob, so that's another motivating factor).
