That's because your terminal emulator (I suppose it's the Gnome
Terminal, since you're using Ubuntu) takes control over F1, instead of
passing it through to TLF. 

One option is to change this behaviour. Either disable all shortcuts
and key bindings: Edit -> Keyboard Shortcuts ->
Disable all menu access keys; Bearbeiten -> Tastenkombinationen ->
Alle Menuekurzbuchstaben desktivieren, or just disable F1 (scroll down
the list, "Help -> F1" is the last item in the list.

The other option is to use another terminal emulator, such as xrvt or
xterm, which doesn't 'steal' your keys by default.
