I also don't see any specific reason not to allow this.
Especially if it already works in texinfo.tex :).
And Info output?  Guess there's no reason it shouldn't work there too.

BTW, I have all the doc stuff saved.  Sorry I haven't been able to get
to it.  Hardware breakage, family obligations, etc., etc.  ASAP ...
