Over the past year at Michigan we've been discussing what the current
"canonical readings" in complex systems are; I compiled an (incomplete)
list of my own candidates, which you can find at:

Waldrop's "Complexity" is probably still the best general introduction,
though it's a bit dated and has its biases. I haven't seen any good
general technical textbooks yet. What we need even more, though, are some
good critiques of the complexity movement.
