configure error under gentoo

We're having some trouble with streamtuner-python under gentoo:

checking for streamtuner >= 0.12.0... yes
checking for python... /usr/bin/python
checking Python version... not found
configure: error: unable to find Python

In configure, it seems that it's calling `/usr/bin/python -c` which returns:
$ /usr/bin/python -c
Argument expected for the -c option
usage: /usr/bin/python [option] ... [-c cmd | file | -] [arg] ...
Try `python -h' for more information

$ python -V
Python 2.3.4c1
