I think it should leave the connection open and process
incomming commands, but not send anything on the
synthesizers. It should also detach from those audio devices,
where it would otherwise mean it's blocking them.
With Pulse Audio, detaching when in inactive session is not

The reason why PulseAudio can't go through dmix is technical.
It couldn't get the timing right, and it does the job better than dmix.
At least the algorithm is better, I have my doubts about the current
implementation :)
