alas, theres not much that can be done about it, other than
remembering to change the subject, when you recognize that your
message will be drifting off-topic - even with rules, people
will still forget to do that

it is not peculiar to this, or any mailing list - the same is
true on web forums, once they reach a certain length - its even
worse on web forums though, because you can not change the
subject in mid-stream - instead, you would need start a separate
new thread, which most people in the current discussion would
not even see (including the person you may be replying to)
