Funky.  Nice catch.

As a data point, neither of the systems I've been testing on or across
have either ACL or ExtendedAttributes enabled.  I've attached the full
list of abilities at the bottom for reference.

All of the file systems involved have the same configurations as
follows, except for "ownership changing", which is on when I do my
actual backups.
