After looking into it a little more, it seems I had two problems.

1. Conexion opening and closing without copying data.
That appears to be an env variables issue that seems to be fixed
wrapping it in a script.

2. Couldn't start up the remote connection by executing ssh -C address@hidden
On the mirror cron log the script runs but on principal's auth log
there was never a session opened (or even requested).

principal_server is a Xen dom0 server. The virtual machines (in my
case) use virtual interfaces that are sitting on a bridge. I think
there was some kind of arp problem between the router and principal
and the router couldn't find principal.
Last night I added some pings to the backup script before calling
rdiff-backup and it worked.
Let's see if this continues to work.
