I don't get it... I did not touch the server since my first mail, yet the
problem is gone. Still, I want to answer your questions because I would like
to understand what happened.

>1. Is this a new install or was the data upgraded from an old version?

1. its fresh
2. just persons
3. the entire entry (*only* in the GUI). I can see entries (and there seem to
be all of them) in the DB tables when doing a select. However, I can see
twenty entries in "phpgw_contact" (and data in the linked tables), but only 3
in the GUI. I feel that some of the rows were entered when I tried to find out
what the adressmasters option is about. Could have anything to do with this?
4. randomly - Name, Adress, Contact Info

@Benoit Hamet: register_globals on or off?
where do I find that setting?

So right now it seems to be ok. But I am left with phantom entries in the db
and I have no idea why they do not show up in GUI.
