Did you enable auto-account creation in setup?

What phpgw version?

can you create a matching account in phpgw?  the phpgw password doesn't matter 
when
using external auth.  If auto-create is enabled, and creating the phpgw account
first works, then this could be a bug in the auto-create process (which is fun 
due
to a nice chicken-egg issue).
