What version of GCC and Shake are you using?

I experienced similar problems compiling OpenEXR plugin for Shake
v3.01, until I compiled it with a local GCC 2.95.4 that I built.

According to the EXR developers mailing list, the ingredients
for a successful compilation are:

        Shake v3.01.x -> GCC 2.95.3 / GCC 2.95.4
        Shake v3.50.x -> GCC 3.1

If all else fails, you can always statically link the plugin with
the EXR libs:

Hope some of that helps.

My next move is finding a job in a VFX industry that isn't hiring (mostly). =)

Cheers!
