We could decide to maintain a portfile in the Octave source tree to make sure 
it remains in-sync with the latest sources.
On the other hand, whatever build system we choose I'm sure it will break every 
now and then during development,
It's all a matter of having someone willing to spend the effort to fix it when 
this happens ...
