My experience is the pause calls do not help.  The timing problem
is within the plot() call.  It is easy to reproduce (and impossible
to avoid as far as I have found) if you are using a system where
the graphics rendering is slow (slow DSL or use of NX).
Upgrading my DSL to 3Mb helped quite a lot. :-)

If anyone has suggestions about how to locate this problem, I
will try to help with debugging.
