Follow-up Comment #19:

I pushed a modified version of your patch here:

Not sure if performance is an issue here, but I moved the check for (Octave's
default) floating point numbers to the front. Additionally, I tried to make
the warning messages more concise. Lastly, I added a BIST for the new
warning.

Marking as ready for test.
