Follow-up Comment #8, bug #59018 (project octave):

I can not say that the variable editor is the problem, but I have not had a
crash since I have made a conscious effort to not use it.    I do know that I
had crashes that occurred when I was doing an operation that did not involve
me selecting or manipulating something in the variable editor, but it is very
likely that I had used the variable editor at some point during the session
before then.    It is hard for me to say whether this is the same issue that
the OP was seeing, but it might be worth his effort to see if he still is
having crashes without using the variable editor.
