This was a simple fix which I made in this changeset:
https://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/b55dd2734aeb.
I notice that you have filed several bug reports against plotting with
gnuplot. gnuplot is not deprecated, but it is not particularly actively
developed. If you can use the qt toolkit, which is the focus of Linux
developers, you will generally be better off.
