Follow-up Comment #28, bug #56952 (project octave):

I see some of those buildbot crashes are on some of my systems that are
configured the same way as the system that I normally use to build and I
wasn't seeing any crashes when I'm building Octave, so that seems odd.  Then I
tried without a graphics display and make immediately and repeatably crashed
for me when generating figures.  Running make with Xvfb avoided the problem.

The difference is that without the display available, I'm getting octave-cli. 
But the stack trace attached to comment #25 appears to be for octave-gui, so
now I'm just confused.

In any case, maybe I can at least fix the octave-cli crash...
