You're going to need to add extra system-specific metadata regardless, and hey, look at these nice user-extensible cert things... :-).
Sure, but to show the correct author in 'mtn log' or 'mtn annotate' et al, that would then have to parse *all* possible third-party VCS source metadata certs.
