Ok, of course, the minute I asked, is the minute I found... According to a comment on this blog entry [1], one can test the output of script:

"if failed /etc/init.d/tomcat status does not output 'And listening on' for 3 cycles then alert for 5 cycles and restart"

I can therefore just make my own little script, test the average time and returning whatever I need.

The best way to detect that is to actually react on a slow response time - or at least a response time average that's rising. Is there an easy to do that with monit ? Can someone simply "plug" a custom script/function to define a new "failed" statement ?
