In both ways I start monit with -c and
give whole path to monitrc.
I also just search thrue the filesystem.
/etc/monitrc is the only monitrc on that server.

reminder from documentation :

"Monit is configured and controlled via a control file called monitrc.
The default location for this file is ~/.monitrc.
If this file does not exist, Monit will try /etc/monitrc, then @sysconfdir@/monitrc
and finally ./monitrc."
